UMMC to open up next field hospital, with ICU beds, in parking garage

The College of Mississippi Health-related Center will open up a 2nd subject medical center in a single of its parking garages, yet another attempt at propping up a medical center process on the verge of collapse due to a surge of COVID-19 individuals.

Samaritan’s Purse, an evangelical Christian humanitarian assist business, will establish and staff members the industry healthcare facility. It will incorporate 32 client beds, with 5 of them being ICU beds. None of the 50 or so beds in the area clinic UMMC opened on Friday are ICU stage.

Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse and son of the late Christian evangelist Billy Graham, tweeted a picture Sunday early morning of 3 loaded vehicles and trailers en route to Mississippi.

This is the most recent advancement in a period of time where by MEMA is seeking out any assist it can get from the federal govt and the private sector to get Mississippi hospitals staffing that is desperately essential.

Over the past week, Mississippi broke its one-day COVID-19 situation history three times. On Wednesday, Dr. Alan Jones, UMMC affiliate vice chancellor for medical affairs, explained that “failure of the medical center system in Mississippi” would happen within just 5-10 days if the rate of hospitalizations did not subside. It has not.

The staffing crisis at UMMC is so dire that the hospital has enlisted the help of next calendar year health care college student volunteers to hold the original area clinic running. The volunteers are not dealing with people, but transporting them to and from the discipline clinic, as effectively as other upkeep responsibilities like bringing foods and switching mattress linens.
